Atlantic Hurricane Names 2009

The National Hurricane Center generates a list of names for tropical storms and hurricanes. Although they've used this system since 1953, it was only in 1979 that the list included both male and female names. Before that all storm and hurricane names were female.

The hurricane names are in alphabetical order, with the storms named chronologically starting with "A." Sometimes there are not enough storms in the year to use up all of the pre-approved names. The next year starts anew with the "A" name again. The list only goes from "A" to "W" and excludes "Q" and "U" names, since names that start with those letters are so rare.

There are six official lists that rotate. The only changes occur when there is a hurricane so destructive that they retire its name, to prevent future confusion. A new hurricane name is then added in its place.
